Vintner Spotlight: Riley Flanagan

April 04, 2026 by John Burdge |

Some people stand out in the wine world because of what they make. Others stand out because of how they show up — the energy they bring, the generosity they extend, and the way they make wine feel both elevated and deeply human. Riley Flanagan is that kind of vintner.

This fall, I am proud to feature Riley as the wine host on one of my AmaWaterways River Cruises Celebration of Wine Cruises: Gems of Southeast Europe, sailing November 15–22, 2026, aboard the extraordinary AmaMagna.

My connection with Riley Flanagan goes back to our years in Tulsa, when my wife Frauke Petersen and I were deeply involved in the local wine community. Those years were shaped by wine dinners, charitable events, and a shared appreciation for the people who make the wine world so special — not just through their craftsmanship, but through their character.

Frauke was involved in several nonprofit initiatives, including the Philbrook Museum of Art Wine Experience, one of the country’s leading wine-centered fundraising events. Riley was part of that community as well, and what stood out was not only the quality of her wines, but her sincere commitment to giving back. She brought warmth, authenticity, and a genuine sense of purpose to the table.

That stayed with me.

So when I launched my travel agency in Napa Valley and began curating AmaWaterways Celebration of Wine Cruises, Riley was one of the first people I thought of as a wine host. She has a natural ability to connect with people, a strong point of view as a winemaker, and a presence that elevates the experience without ever making it feel formal or forced.

This spotlight feels especially timely with the Philbrook Wine Experience coming up April 23–25, 2026. It is a reminder that the wine community at its best is about more than bottles and labels. It is about hospitality, generosity, and shared experiences that leave a lasting impression.

That is also what makes this sailing so compelling.

Gems of Southeast Europe is not the standard Danube itinerary. It is a more layered journey through Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Bulgaria, and Romania — a region rich in history, culture, and longstanding wine traditions. It offers travelers the opportunity to experience a different side of Europe, one that feels immersive, distinctive, and wonderfully underexplored.

And that is where Riley’s role becomes so meaningful.

AmaWaterways’ Celebration of Wine Cruises are about much more than enjoying good wine onboard. They are about creating a deeper connection between the traveler, the destination, and the host. They invite guests into a more personal experience shaped by conversation, storytelling, and the perspective of someone who has dedicated her life to the craft.

Riley’s story is rooted in family and intentional winemaking. In 1999, her father, Eric Flanagan, purchased what became the family’s original vineyard site. In 2001, Riley and her father planted their first vines together, and three years later they made their first wine, a barrel of Cabernet Sauvignon called Riley’s Rows. In 2017, while working as a summer intern at her father’s winery, she realized she wanted to revive the Riley’s Rows brand and make it her own. That vision continues today in wines designed to be thoughtful, well made, and approachable to a broad range of wine lovers.

That sense of purpose is exactly what makes her such a compelling host.

The best wine journeys are never just about where you go. They are about who brings the experience to life. When the right itinerary, the right cruise line, and the right host come together, the result is something far more memorable than a typical vacation.

It becomes personal.

I am honored to be hosting this departure and delighted to have Riley Flanagan bringing her wines, her story, and her spirit to AmaWaterways’ Gems of Southeast Europe this November.

For travelers looking for a river cruise with cultural depth, meaningful wine experiences, and a host who brings both authenticity and heart, this is a standout opportunity.

With fares starting at $3,199 per person and final payment not due until August 2026, there is ample time to plan ahead and secure space on a truly distinctive fall sailing.

If Southeast Europe has been on your radar — or if you have been waiting for the right wine-hosted river cruise to move from interest to action — this is an itinerary well worth considering.
